What Jesus says on Peer Preesure

(I randomly opened my Bible to this verse this morning, and by the grace of God it brought some inspiration. If it it can help someone take it for what it is.)

John 5:44 (Words of Jesus)

NIV
How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?

KJV
How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

Context: Jews were seeking to persecute Jesus for healing man at Bethesda on the Sabbath

Note: How can ye believe----Is that a reason we struggle with so much unbelief, we have put our focus, respect and fear on man instead of God?
Noticed a verse a little before:

John 5:41

I receive not honour from men.

Ask Why?
John 8:50
And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.

Rom. 2:29
But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Paul's Testimony
1 Thess. 2:6
Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others

How many times does my repentance reek of the same smell as Saul? Not willing that people should see my real colors.
1 Sam 15:30
Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God.

The power of it all is that God needs to be the source in our life. It is the source of righteousness that is seen and felt, not just a man made facade for our fellow men to think well of us.

John 7:18   NIV
He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.

2 Tim 3:5
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away

One of the Angels Over Waslala book's Pastors Faces Prison Sentance

Tim Miller a pastor from Tennessee that is featured along side the Pablo Yoder family in the Angels Over Waslala books is facing some charges in a Lesbian custody legal battle. What an unexpected twist! Our prayers should be with this situation and for him and his family's behalf and of course the others involved that good can come out of all this. If you have read the books about the missionary work of the Beachy Amish in Nicaragua, where they had faced death and threats so many times-- you just know God has a way through all this too.

Affluent Stewardship in Recession?

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 1 John 2:16 KJV

For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world. NIV

For everything that is in the world-the desire for fleshly gratification, the desire for possessions, and worldly arrogance-is not from the Father but is from the world. ISV

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Luke 12: 33

(Beware that this article is not about making overt generalizations or any sort of assault, but is based as a strong concern for the wealth fare of the modern Christian----This article is also not directed to the rich [which is relative] but rather the rank and file)
I don't know how to bring this, but I have been lately impressed with the growing affluence among our brethren even in these so called times of recession. It would be one thing if it was modest quiet "accumulation" , but rather it seems that more new pick-ups, farm equipment, and big rolling investments (sorry i know they are just tax deductions) are being made that subtly divide the brotherhood. I personally get caught in a attitude(?) of watching values taught only a short while ago go up in smoke.
It is now all about "following the Spirit" and what he has for you personally. I look at homes that are typical , yet seem to betray that the kingdom is now more centered on this world and heaven is more of a last resort safety net. The worse casualty is our community prayer life and lack of dependency on God in all things. In the my youth I was constantly warned about the danger of affluence, now it is observed and nodded more privately and is often muted. For instance I find myself rationalizing about getting a new vehicle maybe even a SUV and put it on payments and shrug off the cost as necessary. Let the reader not think once that I am pointing at others, but rather am dealing with my own heart as I see covetousness creep in. The Bible says the heart is deceitful above all things. Also it says their is no man righteous of himself, ------so help me God.

Which brings us back to our zeal vs. modern affluence. Face it just
having A/C, electricity, and vehicles we surpass comfort levels of the
ancient kings and emperors of Bible times.

On this topic I have been impressed with about Five points

1. Money brings new light--it just really happens! Watch hardliners
mellow out and talk about "God blesses good stewardship"

2.Increased Peer Pressure. The Respect of fellow individuals becomes
more important than God's opinion. It is very hard to approach a
successful man of affluence because he is "such a good steward" I
noticed personally that when you finally approach them they are very
thankful for your honesty, because other than staff they see mainly
the sugar coated treatment from fellow brethren, etc. Correct me if I
am wrong.

3. Time for More Toys. What is wrong with enjoying "the fruits of good
stewardship?" God doesn't want us to have fun?

4. I had company from the city come down and she kept exclaiming over
our yards as coming strait from "the Better Homes and Garden pg. 72"
she said. It looked so big to them to be able to cook and keep yard.
What about when our people surpass their neighbors by a long ways
 with

living standards. Most of our neighbors are just not good stewards.
They are satisfied with to little!

5. My main question in all this is are we not suppose to be wary of
the World as enemy territory. Are we not suppose to favor caution
rather than liberty? I am seeing more my Grandfather's concerns and am
not laughing or smirking anymore when I see my children before me. Not
with fear, here but this life is a battle not a rest stop to eternity.
The cross is not suppose to something strange--( I cringe writing this
because my flesh is starting to smart at the suggestion)

What Does this mean?

Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Luke 12: 33-34

What went wrong with this Stewardship?

Was this not a retirement plan? Would he not have been an ideal of the "American Dream"? A question asked to see how this relates with the dangers today.

And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. Luke 12:19-21

Feel Free to Leave Comments--I am only here to voice concern and willing to be called a crank if the needs be. Is prosperity merely relative? Even though I am poor to some NA standards am I not still rich when considering the World at large?

Am I a soldier of the cross, a follower of the Lamb?
And shall I fear to own His cause, or blush to speak His name?
Must I be carried to the skies on flowry beds of ease,
While others fought to win the prize and sailed thro bloody seas?
Are there no foes for me to face? Must I not stem the flood?
Is this vile world a friend to grace to help me on to God?
Sure I must fight if I would win! Increase my courage Lord.
I'll bear the cross, endure the pain, supported by Thy Word.

Passing Thoughts: Mennonites in Flip Flops

http://theaestheticelevator.com/2009/07/01/intentional-observation-mennonites-in-flip-flops/

I thought this may interest my Holdeman readership. Such a simple article of clothing brings considerable amount of comment of which alot of us have heard about. I guess a Christian's goal is to dress in such a way that one's character is able be noticed over the noise of his clothes even when he is saying nothing. Make sense? There is probably a better way to say it :)

Haitibook.blogspot.com

It looks like I have taken up in earnest the fight of completing the "Haiti Book" of the history of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Haiti---- complete with stories and culture, etc. I principally am an illustrator and have a number of illustrations from visiting that country and from here and there. I will post the books progress on a sister site, so as not to crowd or derail Operation Noah's purpose. I appreciate contributions from around the world that make this site on Noah possible. Also Christian Evangelical directed inspirations are also desired to make Operation Noah a help rather than hindrance -----to further our goals of reaching our fellow men here in America and abroad.
I am not trying to make this sound heavy or anything :) I think you know what I mean. I feel like such a wretch at times in the light of my weaknesses- I often wonder if the Lord can even use me. Yet when I think of how much he has done for me, the least I can do is get back up and keep on trying. If I can stammer or croak out some encouragement here and there for the Lord let me do it. (Help me God.)

The bottom line is that I have another site for my Haiti Book material at haitibook.blogspot.com for whoever is interested. It is one way also to get the word out and get people serious about contributing articles that are needed for that project. If they smell the smoke maybe they will see fire and help keep it burning. Thanks!

Lastic Canyon Recent Developments 6/19/11

Reports started trickling in to us that flooding had sealed off our reservoir, so last week Raymond called his worker Kervens and asked him to go investigate. Kervens worked with us every day we were on the project in 2011, and knows exactly what we are trying to accomplish. He made the trip last week and this is what he reports. This report will make the most sense to those who have seen the site.
The river has flooded and washed enough slit down to entirely fill the reservoir, and mostly seal it off. A small amount of water is still trickling out the bypass pipes. (This is what we expected to happen, but we thought it would take days, not months). The entire flow of the river, which was only the spring water flow on the day he was there, enters the canal, and is flowing down at a fairly consistent 7" depth the length of its path. Some of it exits the canal out the hole at the location where the first set of gates will go, but most of it continues on. We had dammed the canal near the containers, but that has washed out, so the water continues all the way to the end. The sump is standing full of water, but it does not appear to be running into the pipes. We placed a steel grating over the entrance to the sump, but Raymond had not asked about that, so we don't know if the grating is intact or not. If it is, it seems unlikely to us that the pipe could have plugged, but right now we have no other explanation of why there would not be flow into the pipes.
A 120' section of the canal wall just upstream of the sump on the river side has fallen or is damaged. The water is mostly exiting the canal there and spilling over the cliff back into the canyon. Our water control plan calls for the gates to be closed during high water events, so the downstream walls would be protected. We built in a spillway, but that was intended to handle small amounts that would pass the gates under regular operations, and not mass flooding flows. If the dam washed away early in the flooding event(s), it is likely that a full force of water has weakened and eventually washed out part of the wall. I any event, it will need to be rebuilt and possibly re-designed.
This is mostly good news - the reservoir has filled, and the water is spilling into the canal. But nothing in Haiti is ever quite that simple, and almost every event has some pain attached. The same heavy rains that blessed us have caused havoc and ruin in other parts of the area. Roads have washed out in the Fond Verrette area, and the entire road into our canyon is GONE. Historically, machines could travel into the canyon to the first village called Le Washe that hosts the local market three days a week. From there a road of sorts existed some of the time as far as the Lastic school, and from there a footpath went on the Lastic village, and on to the area of our work. We improved the road to Le Washe, and built a workable road the rest of the way to the work site, mostly in the bottom of the canyon. The reports are that the road is so badly damaged that not even motorcycles can make it to the market in La Washe. I have not heard what that has done to the canyon economy, but the loss of the market will be a severe blow. All of the agricultural produce and charcoal produced back in the canyon is carried by mule or head to the market, where it has historically been hauled away on small trucks. Necessary household items and food stuffs are brought back from market in the age old traditional ways. Raymond reports that a dozer and other heavy equipment will be needed just to gain access back into the canyon with materials, trucks, and people.
The flooding of this and other rivers has significantly raised the level of Lake Azuei, the lake beside our house. It has been creeping up since 2006, and this spring was about 13' above historical levels. This has already wrecked havoc in the local area, covering fields, houses, and most notably, the main road to the DR. The lake level has shot up dramatically in the last month or so, rising about an additional 4', and has caused the evacuation of low lying villages on the NW corner of the lake. It has also effectively shut the road to the DR, which carries the lion's share of the goods imported into the country. The water is reported to be about 2.5' deep on about 5 miles of winding road, so clearly only the brave in big machines will tackle it. Clearly this lake level problem needs to addressed, and the sooner the better, but that is another project.
Many have asked me about the schedule for the future, and offered their services . I appreciate the willingness to go back for another round. At this time we really have no idea when it might work to go back. With weather considerations (hurricane season, rainy seasons, etc), the workload that various of us have lotvo, my need to make a living long enough to pay my own bills, etc. it will take some careful planning to find a window that works for all. With the road washing out, the damage to the canal reported above, setting up camp and getting equipment in place, the project has ballooned to probably a month or more. We have also been requested by the water committee in Fond Parisian to do some repairs and changes on the downstream end. There is also a capped spring that used to bring water to La Blanket, the 1st little village out of FP as you head toward the jobsite. Three hours stiff hike back into the mountains the pipe has broken, and needs some small repairs. Nearer to civilization a gravel company mining gravel near the river dug through the pipeline and removed about 300' as the excavated gravel. We have also been asked to get that back into working order as well. As you know, the needs never end. It is for us to carefully consider what relief we can offer.
